About us…

1st Somercotes Guides, based in Derbyshire, England, offers local girls and young women between the ages of 10 and 14 the opportunity to learn skills, develop confidence and most importantly, have fun!

There are usually between 30 and 40 Guides in our unit. We do not run a waiting list as we have a leadership team and a large hall.

We are a busy and vibrant group with a diverse programme of activities. Some examples of the activities we like to do are:

  • Camping
  • Kayaking
  • Performance
  • Climbing
  • Pamper Evenings
  • Making things with power tools
  • Crafts
  • Hiking and Orienteering
  • Ice Skating
  • Cooking

The Guides work independently in patrols to choose and earn badges. The chocolate badge is always the most popular!

We have a team of five volunteer leaders and a small group of ‘young leaders’, who give up their own time to organise the activities and run the group. Between us, we have over 90 years’ experience as Guide leaders.

Girlguiding gives girls and young women a space where they can be themselves, have fun, build friendships, gain valuable lifeskills and make a positive difference to their lives and their communities. We build girls’ confidence and raise their aspirations. We give them the chance to discover their full potential and encourage them to be a powerful force for good.

We are for all girls and young women, whatever their background and circumstances. We welcome all girls regardless of race, faith, ability, sexuality or income.

We are part of Girlguiding UK, the largest charity for girls and young women in the UK.
